A Giriama Origin Myth
Muyeye was the name of the first Giriama man. He had two wives. Their names were Mbodze and Matsezi. Muyeye's two wives had children, and they were the first Mijikenda. They lived in Singwaya near the Oromo people.
One day the oromo people were offended by one of the Mijikenda. Two Oromo stuck their spears and got out his bow and arrow. As soon as he entered his hut, he surprised the two Oromo, and killed them both.
After this, Muyeye thought it would be a good idea to move his people away from the Oromo followed him there. The Mijikenda moved farther south to Mwaeba, but the Oromo still followed him. Finally, at a place called Kwa Demu, the Mijikenda were so numerous that they decided to split up into separate groups. Each group went in its own direction, and each people built its own kaya to protect it from the Oromo.
