1728- The Portuguese are driven out by the Arabs
1837- Rule by the Sultan of Zanzibar
1890- Colonization by British (Helgoland - Zanzibar contract)
1951-55- Mau Mau uprising
1963- Independence under Mzee Jomo Kenyatta
1964- Kenya becomes a republic
1969- Opposition is banned from participation in election
1978- Moi succeeds Kenyatta as president
1991- Donor countries cut off aid demanding economic and political reforms
1992- Tribal clashes putting the Kalenjin against Luos and Kikuyus,

1997- Bloody conflicts between the students and the police
1998- Tribal clashes before the election in Mombasa along
the coast resulting in many deaths,
Second multi-party election and Moi is reelected
2002- Democratic and free elections in December 2002, Mwai Kibaki (NARC) becomes new president
